That works on a screw head sitting proud of the surface. Most of these tamper screws on appliance bottom plates are recessed in a well so vise grips wont reach.

i opened mine because the paddle stopped spinning and turned out the gear was just stripped. Didnt even need to mess with the motor. Anyway yeah the spanner bit thing is annoying but not a big deal

the gear thing is super common. Its like a soft nylon and it just chews itself up after enough hard ice cream batches
