Common reasons a Delonghi La Specialista stops pumping water?

Saw a list of reasons why the La Specialista might stop pump water. Thought it’d be worth getting a discussion started on this since these are not cheap machines and people often panic and tries to replace the pump right away.
The usual suspects include a few items: Power/tank seating, descaling, reset, checking for inlet and internal components, and lastly the actual hardware of the machine such as the internal water pump or flowmeter.

flowmeter 100%. Had one come in last year with the brew side of the machine completely dead. Customer was convinced it was the pump. Found the flowmeter had gunk in it and cleaned it. Worked perfectly after.
People always skip over the flowmeter because it’s so easy to think the pump is the problem. However it’s the most common issue (in my opinion). Ulka pumps are tough and will fail eventually but not as easy as people think.

descale first, always. If you haven’t descaled in 6+ months that’s your answer 90% of the time.

wait so the flowmeter actually stops the pump from running? or does the pump run but the machine ignores it

The pump will run but the machine will think there is no water going through. On some models it will buzz for a second then stop.

ahh ok. So is there any way to test the flowmeter without disassembling the machine? can you hear the pump try to start?

these machines are over engineered. My gaggia classic from 2008 is still pumping great. No electronics, no flowmeters.

tank seating is a common problem with multiple La Specialista machines. About 1 out of 4 “my machine won’t pump” machines have the tank not properly seated which causes the machine to not receive water.

Yep, did this with one of my buddies La Specialista’s last spring.
Did the descaling.
Did a reset.
Found that when we pulled the side panel off the machine, the pump was fine (even though we did not want to do this. Wrong!) the flowmeter was the problem... The little sensor that detects the flow of water had come loose from its mount. A quick $8 part fix and the machine was fine.

hall sensor?? is that magnetic and how does it interact with the water?

There is a small impeller with a magnet in it that spins in response to the water. The hall sensor detects the passage of the magnetic impeller. No electrical contact with the water. Smart little component.

people will do nothing but panic and replace the pump. Saw this in a few Facebook groups. Man buys a $60 Ulka pump and replaces the part. Still not working. Maybe diagnose the machine first?

My La Specialista was doing the 2 second pump then nothing. Did the descaling with the Delonghi tablets. Still doing it. Found the solenoid was stuck in the half open position. A citric acid solution and letting it sit overnight fixed the issue.

Don’t use pure citric acid and don’t let it sit overnight in the machine with aluminum boilers. Use citric acid solution and stick to the descaling cycle recommended on manufacturer’s site. People insist on the overnight soak and it works till it doesn’t.

fair... My machine has stainless steel boilers so it’s fine. However don’t use this solution on aluminum boilers as it will etch them.
