What actually breaks pre-ground mode on the De'Longhi Magnifica?

throughout my three different magnificas over the course of eight years the pre-ground mode is the least reliable function. You cannot afford to make any mistakes with this function or you will end up with terrible espresso shots or the machine will fail to recognize the pre-ground mode entirely. De longhi made this feature like a checkbox to indicate that you own a machine that can perform this function rather than one that they expect users to use daily. This is a better function on brands like jura that make it much easier to use their pre-ground mode.

jura is also three times the price but worth it for the features they offer.

another thing that irks me about the pre-ground mode is the button order. Why not just have a sensor that detects if there are grounds in the pre-ground bean chute so that it is just pressed when you want to use the mode. Its 2024.

they could of but it would have added more cost to the machine and created another point of failure. Rather they chose to press a button to save money. Hence the reason why they did it.

does the chute have any type of seal on it for the pre-ground beans or is it just an open hole? would you think that the steam would come out of the machine through the pre-grounded bean chute?

it is just an open hole. There is a hinged cover but nothing to seal it. You can get some steam out of the pre-grounded bean chute but the reason the grounds get inside the brew unit is because of this. Just wipe it out from time to time and you will be fine.
