Black and Decker coffee maker reset, is it really this simple?

the idea that the reason the trick works is due to the drain of the residual charge in the bulk capacitor is the most common misconception about this trick. People will say press the button when unplugged as if the machine will work without any explanation. Nice to see someone who understands the reason behind the trick.

its not even the bulk capacitor hold charge. Its the MCU watchdog timer that fails to trigger due to a failed brown out detection. The bulk capacitor is part of the reason but not the whole reason.

the brown out detection circuit will not work without power to the circuit. Therefore, if the bulk capacitor is set such that the MCU can stay alive in an undefined state its functionally the same as the bulk capacitor holding the charge.

brown out detection circuit will fail or be configured in the MCU firmware in a way that causes the MCU to enter garbage mode for a few seconds before the brown out detection works. This is a firmware bug that is not discussed in the manuals when explaining what might cause the coffee maker to fail.
