What actually triggers the Add Water error on Ninja coffee makers?

For those who have encountered the "Add Water" message from there Ninja brewer, I did some digging to find out what causes it and how to fix it. There are four main issue that can result in the "Add Water" message and only one of them is the situation with low water in the machine. The first issue is with the water tank being low which all users will soon encounter. The second issue is that the reservoir isnt properly seat into the machine which will eventually trip most users up as the tank will appear to be properly seated yet the brewer will not recognize it as such. Third is the presence of air within the system which you can fix by simply hitting the Start button a few times to get the machine to prime properly. The fourth and final issue is the result of a faulty pump or a blockage within the line which leads to the brewer being unable to properly dispense the brewed coffee. Usually the solution is to run a descaling cycle before assuming that the brewer’s pump has failed. Ninja brewers tend to accumulate alot of water scale if users are on hard water and do not perform a descaling cycle every few month. Thus, my question to those who have encountered this issue is whether or not the descaling cycle has ever brought a Ninja brewer back from the brink of "Add Water" errors or if at that point the pump is usually considered a lost cause.

descale brought mine from the brink. It was doing the Add Water cycle every single brew for a week before I performed the descaling cycle with the Ninja solution and it was cleared up. Almost 2 years later, my brewer is still functioning.

The reservoir issue got me for a few months before I figured it out. I was always slamming it down but there was a tiny bit more travel at the bottom.

point of no return for me was when the pump started making noise but no water moved. If the pump still makes noise after descaling yet no water comes out, the check valve is stuck or the impeller is shot. At this point, just get a replacement unit.

so whats actually happening when you hit start a few times? Is it somehow priming the system or something?

It's just brute forcing the brewer to suck enough water through the system to clear the air pocket. No prime mode in the machine, Ninja just didnt bother to engineer such a mode into the coffee maker.

For me, hard water is the #1 cause of failure of Ninja coffee makers. If you have well water or high mineral content water in your area, do a descaling cycle every 2-3 months or the pump will fail. One of my friends who uses a Brita pitcher for his water has a Ninja brewer that's going on 5 years now. My sister who fills hers straight from the tap in Phoenix has had to replace hers after 14 months. Same model brewer. Water scale is a big deal.

The water tank getting stuck on the bottom for three weeks. I was about to throw it out lol

Same. The little nub on the bottom of the reservoir is supposed to trigger the sensor and it must be properly depressed. If crud builds up around that nub the tank will not sit flush into the machine.

is the sensor for these magnetic or a physical float?

most are a physical micro switch on the models I see out there.
descaling doesnt touch the switch, only clears the pump. If the switch is gunked up you have to clean that manually by removing the tank.

Last month I had issues with my Ninja coffee brewers and the brew came out very weak. Following a descaling process with vinegar and water at a 50/50 ratio I was able to fix the issue. A lot of people push for the proprietary descaler from Ninja but it's just citric acid in a bottle.
