Is it okay to have impact driver as a simple homeowner?

Has anyone know of any Milwaukee M12 line combo tools that doesn’t include an impact driver on their combos? Most of the combo sets offer an impact driver which I rarely use due to my simple tasks that only needs simple tools such as drill and multi-tools.

Tbh, I didn’t really need any impact drivers when installing basic furniture here in my condominium unit like shelf mounts or TV mounts. For impact drivers, I guess my main issue with them is when I always over-torque while using them.

This problem made me lean towards Surge because it has a better precision. Now that I think of it, maybe impact drivers are okay when used occasionally? Do I really need this stuff or it is just a waste of money for me in the future? Where can I use impact driver here in my condo unit?

Take my advice and get M12 installation drill/driver – it is best for your said situation and perfect for daily use as a simple condo unit owner. Enough power for drywalls and anchors, good for assembling furniture, and best for easy tasks.

I have the same opinion and it is perfect for daily use. I used mine to build IKEA furniture. Best combo set out there.

I agree, a simple drill/driver can be more than enough for daily tasks. But don’t get me wrong, impact drivers are great, especially for a construction guy like me. Back in the day, we didn’t even have impact drivers but we still manage to finish tasks swiftly by just using simple drills.

Is it true that you call all drills, “Makita” in the past? LOL

That’s the stereotype back then and I can relate to this. I know some co-workers who used to call a reciprocating saw a “Sawzall” long ago.

Most of the basics stuff are manageable without using an impact driver. If you’re a condo unit owner, it isn’t advisable to own an impact driver (not unless if you’re building a deck, working with hardwoods, or maybe driving lag screws of some sort). You don’t need to own one, not unless you have a plan to tackle heavier tasks in the future. For me, a simple drill/driver is enough.

Some simple tasks like mounting shelves, assembling furniture, and punching holes into drywalls only needs basic DIY skills and simple tools to accomplish. I suggest you focus on the simple tools first and don’t search for impact drivers now (if you really don’t plan on working on harder tasks in the future). Plus, you can always purchase a great impact driver later, if you decide that it’s time to have it, rather than purchasing it now just for it to build rust in your basement.

As an owner of both of the tools, I could say that you really won’t be needing the impact driver as the drill. If you want, I would bet a $100 that you would be using the drill even for heavy-duty jobs rather than the impact driver.

I guess if you have the budget, then go for it, buy the combo with impact drill. Just think of it as an investment in the future. You’ll never know when to need it. Plus, the M12 line is great when it comes to battery platforms, you won’t need to switch unlike any other brands.

This is just a hot take of mine: I use my impact driver as frequent as my drill. Don’t blame me! It’s easy to use and very versatile when assembling outdoor furniture and even installing fences.

Hear me out. Impact drivers are not for everyone – it is better for people who use a tool for repetitive driving hard materials such as lag bolts, deck screws, tough exterior work, etc… It is not advisable for a simple condo unit owner like you. You need drills for delicate tasks and precision drilling in drywall anchors.

M12 Surge can be pretty annoying for a condo unit owner like you, it’s not advisable because of its loud and irritating noise when used extendedly. If noise is your number one concern on impact drivers, I suggest you stick on to a drill and avoid impact drivers.
