Hello guys! I just wanted to share with you that me and my partner had our first home, it is a three bed, one bath, beautiful 1960 house. This home has a non-functional garage door and we plan to upgrade it by having a automatic roll-up door.

I know that DIYing a garage door is pretty hard specially its springs and I might need an extra hand or a professional to do the job. I know myself that I’m pretty good DIY guy. Any advice for me?

Yo, man. Just hire a professional and you won’t regret it. Garage doors are pretty dangerous and hassle, take my advice and you’ll be grateful for me later! 😊

Don’t take the risk dude. Ngl, garage doors are extremely dangerous and finicky, even pros can get it wrong. I agree with User3, just hire pros that can handle this type of jobs.

I had the same problem and went for the pros for this job. Surprisingly, I got quoted only $100 for parts and labor. Finished the job in less than 6hrs and I am never been happier for my decision.

Do you have the special tools or equipped with proper knowledge? If not, then don’t do it. But even if you have, seek help.

The big spring and the tension it has, together with its cables are the most dangerous part of DIYing it. Even if you know what you’re doing, the cables can snap and take an arm off, that’s why I won’t consider DIYing it at the first place. Not worth the risk.

I suggest that you get a computation of DIYing it compared to hiring a professional for this specific job. I know that a modern door has electricals on it, especially automatic roll-up doors. Consider the electrical wirings, tracks, opener, switches, and the main door. Replacing a door is hard by itself, but a full install is another story.

Also, think about your garage’s wiring if it has the right wiring for a modern door. Consider the structure if it can support a modern door, are the reinforced in their right spots?

Nothing scares me the most than its big spring. The one from my parent’s house broke 10-15 years ago and it was really loud. The tension in it must be so overwhelmingly strong to be that loud.

I’m almost a senior citizen and been owner of our house for over 20 years, I once DIY and I swore to myself never to do it again! There’s a lot of things to be afraid of, springs, tensions, rails, and miscalculations. Lucky that I finished it without injuring anyone, especially me haha.

My suggestions is to just find a good old garage door company, for they will know exactly what to do with your problem and finish it in less than 2 hours. Don’t take the risk of a first-timer days of frustration, if you have the money just get a quote from them, and make sure that they are one of the most reputable door companies to avoid more stress.

If you really wanted to DIY it, just avoid the strings because they’re really dangerous and might cause serious injuries. I remembered DIYing the track and motor without working with the springs. If you really wanted to work with the springs, just call a pro for that scary thing 😩

Call the pros, Dude! Get quote and someone to inspect your door for you to arrange your budget beforehand, to avoid any future price surprises!
