Anyone know the trick to opening a Kitchen Mama can opener?

The battery contact spring corroded on mine. Once you open it up the same way as the OP, i cleaned it with a fiberglass pen and it was good as new. No need to go past the battery cover though since the contact spring is accessible from outside the can opener.

Awful battery contact issue, these gadgets are thrown out every time the $0.10 spring corrodes.

They are not giving up, its a couple of threads on reddit about this. The cans appear sealed but the seam is super tight underneath the trim. Once you know the trick its 90 seconds tops to get it open.

Use a jimmy or a credit card wedge instead of a screwdriver. Metal leaves marks on the plastic. Ive opened about a dozen of these and each time its the same. Its not the gadgets its the trim where the screws are that people tend to break.

A credit card wedge is underrated, ive got some old expired cards in my drawer for this very purpose.

Quick follow up, when you pull the two screws under the trim does the back cover come straight off or do you have to twist it? Also, is there a ribbon cable connecting the two halves?

Its a straight off cover and no ribbon in between. The PCB is on one side of the cover and the motor is on the other with two wires connecting the two sides.

Its also worth noting that the screws under the trim are of different lengths on some of the revisions so make sure to not mix them up when putting it back together. The thinner one on the cover goes into the thinner boss otherwise you risk cracking the housing.
