I’ve been searching for some great options for cooling and heating system upgrades. Does having a central AC system together with heat pumps better when handling cool temperatures in the house effectively? My brain can’t decide whether to have both or just one of them, will either suffice?

I live in a house with about 2,000 square feet. What do you think is the most effective setup for me? Natural gas heater, heat pump, centralized AC or do you have any preferred new tech that you want me to consider?
 
Heat pumps. Modern, effective when it comes to cooling and heating, great on areas with moderate climates, and cost-effective.
 
I have a dual-fuel heat pump. Nice when handling the cooling and switches to natural gas when I need heat.

I’ve heard that its very pricey at first but totally worth it in the long run. Also, they’re nice when handling extreme weather swings.
 
How about mini-split? They’re pretty good for zone control and don’t need ductwork which can clearly save you more compared to heat pump.

They have their own downside, they can’t cool large places like his place (2,000 sq ft). Unless you have plenty of units and money to run them.
 
Here’s some of my learnings about my recent heat pump upgrade that I like to share with you:
  1. Heat pumps really are your best bet when it comes to cost-effectiveness. Get an inverter model to save more and run it in low thermostat to save some energy.
  2. Make sure that you choose a size that fits yours well. Don’t settle for less and also don’t over buy. Ask the installer what size is perfect for your place.
  3. Due to its pricey upfront cost, the best way to think of it is to consider it an investment. Check out rebates, they might help you with the upfront cost.
 
Am I the only one who knows about geothermal? I know, it’s expensive, but it is great for cooling and heating!

Geothermal is too much for typical people – like, wtf? Most of us just use heat pumps – they are a good start for middle class people like us.

Do you have a great insulation at home? If not, you might want to focus on that first before upgrading your system.

not a good idea, might be good for someone who needs to cool their workplace or bedroom – mini-splits are built for those kinds of rooms.

Nothing that I can think of… Just needed to buy a new breaker for my new heat pump. Ask your installer if you need any upgrades so that you’ll be ready.
