Cuisinart ice cream maker not freezing, usually one of three things?

A few threads has come up about Cuisinart ice cream makers not freezing the mix but the issue come down to three possible causes. Saw this discussion start about this so thought I’d bring it up since its something people tend to encounter when first trying out the machines.
One cause is that the bowl wasn't properly frozen before adding an ice cream mix. If the bowl makes any liquid noises when shaken, it's not yet frozen enough. It should be frozen to around -18C for at least 12 hours.
The other two issues are related. If the freezer is set to a too-warm temperature, the bowl will sit at too-warm temperatures regardless of how long it is left in the appliance. The freezer should be set to the coldest temperature possible. Finally, the most common issue that I see (though you’d think people would read the manual): the user places the freezer bowl into the fridge compartment instead of the freezer. The bowl will not freeze in the fridge.
Ngl, most posts about ice cream makers being “broken” due to these three issue are due to one of these three problems.

mine actually did fail for real, after like 4 year the inner wall developed a tiny leak and you could see the blue liquid pooling at the bottom of the freezer. So yeah it happens but rare.

12 hours is honestly the bare minimum. I leave mine in there permanent now, just lives in the back of the chest freezer year round. Never had a failed batch since I started doing that.

wait so does shaking it actually damage anything or is it just a check? like can you hear partial slosh and still get away with churning a thinner mix?

Honestly if you have to read a forum post to figure out why your ice cream maker isnt working maybe just buy the cheap bag of ice and salt method lol

the fridge compartment one is funnier than it should be but I work appliance repair part time and you would not beleive how many people call about freezers not freezing and its because a kid or something bumped the temp dial to 7 (warmest). Same energy.

is -18 really the magic number or is that just because thats the standard freezer spec? like would -22 actually freeze it faster or does the bowl have a floor on how cold the solution get?

Counterpoint: the compressor models are worth every penny and you never have to think about any of this. I had the cuisinart freezer bowl for years, sold it, got a Lello, never looked back.

sure if you have 400 bucks and counter space for a giant box. For someone making ice cream 3 times a year the bowl is fine, you just have to actually use it correctly which is the whole point of this thread.

ran into a genuinely dead one last summer. Bowl had been sitting in the freezer for 2 days, freezer was at -20, mix was properly chilled, churned for 40 minutes and got soup. Opened it up and you could hear sloshing real clearly. Cuisinart actually replaced it under warranty no questions asked, said the seal had failed and the solution had partially escape into the wall cavity. So it does happen but in my case it was obvious because the weight was off too, felt noticeably lighter than the replacement when it arrived.
