La Specialista pouring cold coffee, heater element the usual suspect?

how do you know if it’s scale in the thermoblock instead of an electrical issue?

If it’s scale the machine will struggle to heat the water but will still produce hot water. If it’s an electrical issue you’ll get cold water from the machine. Not a perfect rule to go by but helpful in ruling out the most common causes.

Fwiw, Mine started to produce lukewarm coffee but the unit was still producing hot water. Performed a descaling process on the thermoblock and it has returned to normal. Worth a try if you haven’t taken the time to descale your machine.

descaling can actually finish off a thermoblock that is already partially clogged. The chunks of scale will come apart and completely block the water outlet. Ask me how i know.

Yep to mine as well. After years of neglect the machine had become very clogged but after a good descaling the chunk of scale that had built up at the tip of the thermoblock was finished off. When you’re neglectful about descaling it’s better to use a gentle descaling solution instead of a strong one.

wild to see a machine for 700 euro the element cannot be replaced. My Gaggia classic 30 years old and the boiler can be taken apart with 4 bolts.

Different design philosophy. The thermoblocks are smaller because they heat on demand but you sacrifice accessibility of the components. Classic machines use boilers that take 15 minutes to heat up to the required temperature.

unrelated but have you guys noticed a gurgling noise coming out of the steam wand when the La Specialista is starting to fail? Mine started making this noise after a few weeks of lukewarm water before it stopped heating altogether.

The gurgling noise usually means the machine has air in the steam wand due to a failing steam wand or due to a blockage in the steam wand. Not related to the heater but may show while disassembling the machine to inspect the steam wand.
