Hello guys! I’m getting really interested installing wainscoting in my hallway, dining room, and in our bathroom. The catch is, I’ve never done this before, but I think its doable. I’m just afraid of newbie mistakes, so I ask for any good recommendations or tips. Thanks in advance guys!

Share us some pictures of what wainscoting you wanted. Do you want the traditional, library panel, paint, or stain? Give us some visuals so we can advise accordingly.

Very straightforward, dude! I like it! For painted, use affordable materials since appearance isn’t much critical. Plywood sheets, MDF, or hardboard can cover your wall. Use poplar boards for the frame.

My tip is to always remember to use a laser when installing, to check for any high and low spots and to check for leveling – even floors can be uneven or crooked. Always make sure everything is leveled.

Here’s my first timer tip if you’re eyeing for stained wood finish. Use 1/2" plywood for the base and design it with poplar, attach plywood to the wall, the add poplar design to the top. This way is too easy even for newbies yet it still gives your house a sophisticated look!

I’m a big fan of jigs, that’s why I recommend to use a pocket hole jig all throughout the project. It will help you tremendously and make the process much smoother! Check my profile for some similar projects.

Done similar projects in my home, and my partner really loved it! I used 1/4" thick strips for top edge of the baseboard. A bit narrower, but after painting, they looked great! Very affordable, easy to install, and straightforward!
