Magnifica grinding way too much coffee per shot, common cause?

A few people has mentioned that the Magnifica models are known for overdosing on the grind settings. From what I understand, the usual fix is to adjust the grind to a finer setting (higher number on the dial), lower the strength of the coffee setting and use a single espresso or coffee instead of the double settings. Some say that if the grinder is particularly dirty, that could be contributing to the coffee being dose too heavily as the grounds tend to gum up when old and the burrs do not allow for even extraction of the beans.
I'm not sure what people's experiences have been with any of these fixes though. Does anyone have suggestions as to which is the best fix for the overdosing issue on the Magnifica coffee makers?

grind size is the biggest lever by far. I went from setting 3 to setting 6 on my magnifica s and the overdose problem just vanished. Strength button barely moved the needle for me tbh
 
Double is definitely more than 2x single on mine. Weighed it out of curiosity, single was about 7g, double came out closer to 16-17g. Not huge but it adds up if you're already overdosing.
 
The real answer is that the Magnifica machines dose the amount of coffee by the run time of the grinder’s motor, not by the weight setting. Thus, if the beans is oilier or fresher, the grinder will take longer to extract the coffee and the motor will dose more coffee into the brew chamber. The same effect occurs with grind size and strength settings, since all of those factors impact the run time of the motor. Therefore, if you go to a finer grind, more coffee will be dosed because the motor will run for a shorter period of time (since the coffee will pass through the grinder more quickly), AND if you adjust the strength button, because the motor will run for shorter periods of time. That’s essentially why the solution is to either adjust the grinder to a coarse grind to allow for more coffee to pass through each second, OR to lower the strength setting to reduce the amount of time the motor will run.

ok that actually makes sense, so its a flow rate thing not a packing thing
 
Has anyone tried just weighing the puck after a shot to confirm the dose? I know that it is supposed to be around 7g but I’ve never done this before.

yeah i do this. Puck is wet so add maybe 1-1.5g for water weight. Mine reads 14g wet on a single which is way too much for a 7g target
 
nah you're half right. Its both. Finer grind moves slower through the chute AND packs denser in the brew chamber. You cant separate the two

You can separate them, the dose by weight is determined almost entirely by the time that the motor runs and the density of the coffee beans. The brew chamber on a magnifica isnt fully packed with coffee with any grind size.
 
had this same problem. Found out the bean hopper rubber seal was allowing the beans to drop in too fast. Nobody ever mentions this when they show you the machine but its real.
 
I had the same problem around the time my machine was about a year old. I first tried adjusting the grind size. I went from 4 to 7 and the bitterness of my shots decreased but the shots were heavy. Then I also lowered the strength of the coffee and that fixed the problem. I never touched the cleaning of the machine because I run a cleaning tablet through the brew unit every few weeks. I usually adjust the grind size first, then the strength, and only clean the grinder as a last resort if my beans come out oily.

What strength setting are you guys using for their espresso recipe? I'm currently on the middle bar but I'm concerned that my shot will be watery.
